Marterer, Hanfmann put Germany through to quarterfinals after defeating Chile in Davis Cup
Germany advanced to the Davis Cup quarterfinals after Maximilian Marterer and Yannick Hanfmann secured a 2-1 victory over Chile in their Group C tie on Thursday.
Marterer gave Germany a 1-0 lead, beating Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera 6-3, 6-4 in the opening rubber.
Chile leveled the tie through world number 111 Alejandro Tabilo, who stunned Alexander Zverev 6-4, 6-2, leaving the tie hanging in the balance.
Germany reach quarterfinals after beating Chile
In the deciding rubber, Hanfmann defeated Nicolas Jarry 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 to secure Germany's place in the last eight.
Speaking after the match, Hanfmann said: "I'm so happy that I was able to play with Maxi and get the win for Germany. It was an intense atmosphere out there, but we stuck together as a team and got the job done.".
Germany will face Australia in the quarterfinals on Friday.
