Safe Ways to View the Total Solar Eclipse
Pinhole Viewers
DIY Method
Pinhole viewers are a popular and easy way to view solar eclipses safely. To make one, simply poke a small hole in a piece of cardboard. The tiny hole will project light from the eclipse onto a piece of paper or cardboard, allowing you to see the effect.
Kitchen Colander Method
The tiny holes in a kitchen colander can also be used to project light from the eclipse. Place a piece of paper or cardboard behind the colander and hold it up to the sun. The light will pass through the holes and create a projected image of the eclipse.
Other Safe Methods
Here are some other safe ways to watch a solar eclipse:
- Watch the light pass through tree leaves.
- Peer into a modified cereal box.
Pinhole Projector
If you don't have a pair of eclipse glasses, you can build a pinhole projector to safely observe the total solar eclipse on April 8th. A pinhole projector forms an image on a screen just like a converging lens, the type you find in a telescope or microscope.
