Cook County's John H Hospital: A Leader in Healthcare Innovation

450-Bed Teaching Hospital serves as the hub for Cook County Health

The John H. Hospital remains at the forefront of new therapies and innovations in healthcare. As the flagship of Cook County Health, the 450-bed teaching hospital serves as the hub for the delivery of specialty and sub-specialty care in Cook County.

From Its Founding to Today

Northwest Territory law and the Illinois General Assembly assigned the care of paupers to the counties. From 1832 until 1866, Cook County fulfilled this obligation by providing a minimum of food and medicine for patients in temporary hospitals or private homes. Physicians and students from Rush Medical College provided medical care.

In 1866, the Cook County Hospital was established as a permanent facility. It was renamed Stroger Hospital in 1979, and then John H. Hospital in 2012.

Recent Investments and Upgrades

Cook County Health has invested heavily in John H. Hospital in recent years. In 2019, the hospital completed a $58 million renovation that included upgrades to the emergency department, operating rooms, and patient care units.

A Commitment to Patient Care

John H. Hospital is committed to providing high-quality, affordable healthcare to all residents of Cook County, regardless of their ability to pay. The hospital offers a wide range of services, including:

  • Emergency care
  • Inpatient and outpatient surgery
  • Specialty and sub-specialty care
  • Behavioral health services
  • Primary care

John H. Hospital is also a teaching hospital, affiliated with the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. The hospital provides training for medical students, residents, and fellows in a variety of specialties.
